I can read notes and play the piano by ear. I am playing elton john songs bc i have good natural rhythm and can read the notes. However, if you were to give me a song that I’ve never heard before I would have a hard time reading the sheet music. I know what the notes are but the tough part is getting the beat down. I can’t afford a teacher. What is a good way to start practicing this? Are there any good books you could recommend?

It is really great that you are going to learn to read music. The greatest musicians I know can do both.
I am going out on a limb here, but a possible good start, would be to get a beginners recorder book then after a while bo on to the piano..
Another possibility is instead of playing the piece, only tap out the rhythm.
As to being unable to afford a teacher. Find a friend who plays and will work with you for a while.
Start with the basics, all the way down to playing on a mute piano, or muting it out and practice reading the rythm. The thing is you have never really played something without knowing what it is as you said, so thats not really reading. Dont play and read anything you know for a while, otherwise you wont excercise the right ‘muscles’.
Its going to be boring at the begining tho. Good luck.
How can you be such a good person with great timing and YOU DON’T OWN A METRONOME.? You learn to read music by learning the basics and then you practice A LOT. You have already picked up a bunch of REALLY BAD HABITS because you have taken the easy way and learned to play ‘by ear’.. if you ever want to be any good you need to learn how to read real music and THERE IS NO EASY WAY.. and the BEST WAY is to HIRE A TEACHER which is something you people never seem to think is important.
