You don’t have to be able to read music to play guitar! It’s quite similar to piano but you have a lot more variety in tone and pitch. It’s fantastic that you’ve learned by ear!
I recommend picking up an acoustic and giving it a try. There are six strings, the top is the lowest and largest string that’s called the E string in standard tuning.
From there it goes A, D, G, B, E the last E is the highest in tune and thinnest in size. There are usually about 20 frets on a guitar, which are the little metal lines going across the neck. The one closest to the head of your guitar (where the tuning pegs are) is fret one. The one closest to the sound hole (seen in most acoustics) is fret 20, or 19 depending on your guitar.
It’s really easy to read tablature, much easier than reading real music! Tabs look like this:
E|——————————–
B|——————————–
G|——————————–
D|——3————————-
A|——2————————-
E|———————————
The letters stand for the strings, the bottom E on the tab remember is the top string, the thick and low sounding one and the first featured E on the tab is the thinner, higher sounding E. It may seem like tabs are written upside down but when you look at them and play guitar they really aren’t! The note above is an E minor chord, probably one of the easiest and it can be played by placing one finger on the A string, fret two and the D string fret 3.
How you want to play is up to you, learn to play what you enjoy! There are no rules. I do know of a very helpful music teacher you can find on youtube, his name is Walt Ribiero.
Best wishes and Happy playing!
its easy you dont have to be able to read music
I taught myself and had no problem. I still have trouble reading music but its not as useful anymore. Now there are tab sites and all sorts of ways to learn guitar.
If i were you id learn a few chords and scales and just mess around with them. Knowing the notes on the fretboard also helps too because you can easily improv on a scale knowing it will go with your song. (a song in G key would use G pentatonic or some other G scale) Either way it takes more practice than knowledge to get decent at guitar, though knowledge helps.
